Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was an American illustrator and author, best known for his contributions to children's literature. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Pyle began his artistic career as a commercial illustrator, working for magazines and advertising firms. He soon became one of the leading illustrators of his day, known for his imaginative and detailed illustrations that brought stories to life.

In 1881, Pyle began teaching illustration at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, where he encouraged his students to develop their own style and imagination. He also published several books of his own, including "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" and "The Wonder Clock." These books, with their imaginative illustrations and engaging stories, captured the hearts of children and adults alike and helped to establish Pyle as one of the most important figures in American children's literature.

In addition to his work in children's literature, Pyle was also a successful painter, known for his landscapes and historical scenes. He was particularly interested in historical events and legends, and many of his paintings depicted scenes from American history and folklore.
