Cornelis van Spaendonck was a Dutch painter who specialized in still lifes and portraits. He was a pupil of Jan van Huysum and was influenced by the Dutch Masters, as well as the French rococo style. Van Spaendonck became a prominent teacher, and many of his students went on to become successful artists. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Van Spaendonck is known for his precise and detailed depictions of flowers, fruits, and other objects, as well as his portraits, which are characterized by their delicate brushwork and luminous color.
Van Spaendonck was born in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands in 1756. He received his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he studied under the famous still-life painter Jan van Huysum.
In 1788, van Spaendonck was appointed as a professor of ornamental design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He held this position until his retirement in 1826. During his time at the academy, he trained many talented artists, including Pierre-Joseph Redouté, who went on to become one of the greatest botanical illustrators of all time.
Van Spaendonck's paintings are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail, delicate brushwork, and luminous color. He was especially skilled at capturing the delicate beauty of flowers, fruits, and other objects in still-life compositions.
Some of his most famous works include "Flowers in a Glass Vase," "Flowers in a Terracotta Vase," and "Portrait of a Lady with a Parasol." These works can be found in museums and private collections around the world.
