William Tylee Ranney (1813-1857) was an American painter and one of the first American artists to be known for painting Western American frontier scenes. He was born in New Jersey and grew up in an artistic family. Ranney studied art in New York City before traveling to Europe to continue his training. He lived in Italy for several years and was greatly influenced by the Italian Renaissance painters, particularly the work of Michelangelo.

After returning to the United States, Ranney settled in New York and began to establish himself as a painter. He became known for his dramatic, large-scale canvases depicting American frontier life, particularly scenes from the American West. He was one of the first artists to paint the American West in a realistic and romantic style, capturing the spirit and character of the frontier.

Ranney's work was well-received by the public and he was regarded as one of the leading artists of his time. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Despite his success, Ranney suffered from ill health and died at a young age, at the age of 43.

Today, Ranney's work is highly prized by collectors and is widely recognized as an important part of American art history. His paintings continue to be exhibited and admired for their historical significance and their powerful visual impact.
